Battery Park City

· History:  By the late 1950s, this port area of lower Manhattan, called the Greek quarter, was filled up with ruined shipping piers. Therefore the landfill proposal was offered in the early 1960s, and then the landfill was completed in 1976, made from dirt and rocks excavated during the construction of the World Trade Center, as well as from sand from Staten Island.
Today, Battery Park City consists of two sections, the World Financial Center Complex (the Northern section) and the Southern section, which contains Gateway Plaza and the Rector Place apartment Buildings, among other condominium buildings.
