· History: By the late 1950s, this port area of lower Manhattan, called the Greek quarter, was filled up with ruined shipping piers. Therefore the landfill proposal was offered in the early 1960s, and then the landfill was completed in 1976, made from dirt and rocks excavated during the construction of the World Trade Center, as well as from sand from Staten Island.
· Nearby Taste: Along the river check out: Gigino - Italian (South tip-Wagner Park) Liberty View - Chinese (South Cove) Steamer’s Landing - Seafood (South of North Cove Marina) Also, visit the many great restaurants around North Cove Marina and inside Winter Garden.
· Nearby Place: Shop at the famous Century 21 Department Store on Church & John Street. In the World Financial Center, there are many luxury boutiques inside Winter Garden, as well as ongoing arts events. |
